For the incoming college freshman…

Determine what your convictions are now.

In moments of pressure, and yes they will come, what you believe to your core is what will come out in your actions. According to God’s word, what convictions should you have as you enter into this new season?

Put yourself in the right places.

Your presence matters greatly. The places your feet take you can bring many opportunities and newfound joys but also regrets and mistakes. Choose wisely.

Community isn’t developed overnight.

Be patient and allow God to cultivate friendships that will give you life. In the meantime, be the friend you’re looking for. Some of the best relationships are on the other side of an awkward conversation.

It’s okay to say no.

Be careful with your “yes.” It will lead to burnout and exhaustion. Just because everyone else is doing it, doesn’t mean that you’re missing out if you’re not. Learn early the power of the “no.”

Find a local church and plant yourself in it.

You were not meant to walk this Christian life alone. You were made to be deeply rooted in a body of believers. It wasn’t given as an option, but rather as a command. Find a church that you can faithfully attend, serve, and be discipled in. Your involvement in gathering with the body will determine the fruitfulness of your college experience.

Prioritize what you value.

You make time for what’s important to you. That includes your time with the Lord. The people you choose to be sharpened by. The grades you desire to make. The functions and events you choose go to. The clubs and activities you sign up for. Evaluate what is important to you and discipline yourself not to settle for anything less.

Your college years can look different than what’s normal.

You don’t have to be in the in crowd. You don’t have to take part in what’s popular. The story Jesus is writing for you is made perfect just for you.

Give yourself grace for this transition.

Allow yourself to fail. Emotions are good, you can cry. It’s okay to miss home. Living in a dorm and sharing a bathroom with a whole floor of girls is an adjustment. Not knowing is normal. Failing that first test is not going to kill you. Don’t expect perfectionism.

Study, have fun, and rest.

The best college life is a balanced one. Study study study, have a lot of fun because college is fun and don’t neglect the gift of rest.

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” - Matthew 6:33
