How to approach sorority recruitment week as a believer.
Your identity rests in what the cross of Calvary says about you rather than the Greek letters you identify with or are longing to attach yourself to.
For the girl who’s rushing:
Start every morning with the Father, in His word, worshiping Him, and aligning your heart to His through prayer. Let him speak truth over you before you open a schedule, put on your makeup, or walk into that party. What will you let set the tone for your day?
I’ve rushed myself and know the one piece of advice everyone will give you is to “be yourself and go into this week open-minded, that you will end up where you’re meant to be.” As your sister in Christ, I would say the best piece of advice you can take to heart is this, “God sees the bigger picture over your four years on that campus. Trust that He allows all things to happen for your good and His glory.”
As much as you try not to have expectations going into the week, you still do. I wish there was a way to prepare for the possible heartbreak of getting dropped from your top sorority, but there’s just not. In moments of gut-wrenching shock, you have to posture your mind on truth because we walk by faith and not by sight. The truth is that God ALLOWED them to drop you. It wasn’t a mistake. His redirection is to bring about his most abundant life for you. It’s okay to be disappointed for a moment, but pick your head up and fix your eyes on the author and perfecter of your faith. He sees what you don’t.
God doesn’t withhold good from his daughters. His plans are for you to prosper. You can remain constant this week because you walk with the one who never changes.
The sorority you desire most may not be the place that best cultivates the holiness of God in your life. In His love, God could care less about what makes you happy for a season here on this earth. In His eyes, you are already seated with Him in glory. He will bring about the result that magnifies Himself most in you.
I know some acted like they liked you and made empty promises. Let that feeling of rejection remind you of the goodness of your father and how He keeps His promises. Never once has He failed you.
God sees you. There’s never a moment that His eyes are turned off of you. He sees you getting ready in that community bathroom. He sees you as you stand in that line before you walk into that party. He sees you in the masses of the groups. He sees you in your rejoicing and your grief. He sees you when you feel all alone and unseen. Because he sees you, it doesn’t matter who doesn’t.
Celebrate the joy you feel when you run home to your dream sorority or on the flip side, celebrate the girl who got the seat in the chapter that you so deeply wanted. God sees your celebration, sister. It will not be wasted.
The girl who confidently knows who she is in Christ goes through sorority recruitment differently than the rest. She’s set apart and people take notice.
For the girl who’s recruiting girls:
Remember above recruiting, you are called to serve. Don’t waste any opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus.
Look past her last name, makeup, perfectly curled hair, and outfit that she bought months ago, and look into her heart. Does she possess character that looks like Jesus? What are the affections of her heart? Will should be a force for the kingdom within the walls of your chapter? Will she bring light into the darkness of broken girls & a lost campus? Seek after that girl.
You have the opportunity to make her feel overwhelmingly seen and loved by her Savior, or you can grieve her heart by the words you speak to her and the way you make her feel.
It’s okay to go against the crowd or popular vote to be the one who stands for what’s most God-honoring or to choose the girl who the majority wouldn’t.
You won’t stand before Jesus in heaven and hear him ask “What sorority were you in?” Rather he will ask, “What did you do with the influence and space that I created for you in that chapter to make much of me?”
God didn’t create sororities. They are man-made. So we sometimes feel the effect of its brokenness. But when believers step into this realm, there Christ is. May rush week be different because He who is holy lives within you.
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Matthew 5:14-16
